My father was a carpenter for more than thirty years, and I too have followed in his footsteps! As an apprentice carpenter, I am working for hours each and every day, crafting wonderful pieces of furniture from beautiful timbers such as oak, mahogany, birch, and cedar.
At the moment, I am working on an amazing barrister 2 shelf bookcase. It is only a small piece of furniture, but I am planning on giving it to my grandmother for her ninetieth birthday - she can place it next to her bed, so that it doubles as a bedside table, and within it she can place all of her most valuable of texts, including her own wartime journals, original copies of novels and decades old photo albums.
2 Shelf Bookcase
I am crafting this 2 shelf bookcase out of twenty year old American oak, which is a particular kind of timber that ages very well over time, producing a very mature and rustic aesthetic appeal. This timber has a wonderfully rich and earthy aroma, and it in this in mind that I have decided to leave the bookcase unfinished - this is to say that I will not be coating it in any lacquer, which has the potential to "smother" the timber.
I am also working on crafting a birch wall mounted bookshelf, to put in my own study. I am big reader, and have accumulated a huge library of books over the years, so I am looking forward to having a place of my own to store them. As I do not have much space in my apartment, the wall mounted bookshelf will allow as much floor space as is possible. Having the bookcase mounted on the wall takes a bit of DIY knowledge, but with a bit of practice, I believe everyone can knock one together.
