Once both ends are secured, it takes a lot of force to cause a cabinet to topple.

Speaking of toppling, this is the same control used to prevent furniture from falling over during an earthquake. Thus, if you live in earthquake country, this is a procedure you should be using anyway. Again, it is critical that the wall side of the bracket be screwed or lagged to the stud. Except for extremely severe quakes, the moving earth may rattle the bookcase a bit, but it won't topple over on someone. If it's only fastened to the plaster board, it will pop free in a minute.

Securing cabinet and appliance doors and drawers will keep little guys out of trouble, at least this kind of trouble anyway, and out of harm's way. Attaching a bookcases and china cabinets to wall studs prevents them from tipping over on a child.

No matter how large the space available is, sometimes we won't have enough space to our shoes. It is always possible to buy a new shoe shelf from a local furniture store. But nothing beats the excitement of building your own shoe shelf or a rack.

Measurements

Before you go to the local store to buy the materials needed for your shelf, take some measurements of the shelf you will need. This will help you to know the length of the boards you will need to buy. Zero in on a suitable location and take all possible measurements for that are. Once you have the measurements ready, go ahead and but the needed materials.

Materials

Next you will need to make a list of material needed to build the shelf as per your shoe self plans. Ideally you will need the following things

• 1 1/2-inch-thick and 6-inch-wide board
• 1/2-inch-thick and 3-inch-wide board
• screws
• screw driver
• "L" brackets.

The number of boards will depend on the number of layers of shelves you are intending to build. These materials can be easily found from local hardware store and sourcing them won't be a big problem. Cut the boards according to the measurement and the space available at the place where you are placing this shoe shelf.

Assembly

Attach the two "L" brackets facing downwards using the screws to the back of the 6-inch-wide board at least 2 inches from each edge. Mark the wall where you want to mount the shoe shelf and attach the bracket at these marked points. Make sure that you have enough space left in case you are adding more shelves. Now attach the 3-inch board above the boards.

You can attach as many racks as you wish and build your own shoe shelf as per the custom made shoe shelf plans.

I have been surrounded by all kinds of beautiful pieces of furniture for most of my entire life. See, I used to live in an old town house within Georgetown in Washington DC; this house was over a hundred years old and was owned by my grandmother, and was filled with a myriad of gorgeous antique furniture.

Among the furniture were a few pieces that particularly stood out from the rest. Firstly, my grandmother owned a fifty year old artesian dining table that was crafted from American oak. This dining table had the most wonderful aroma and texture, and was the centrepiece of the entire house. It gave an unprecedented warmed to the dining room that it was in.

The second piece of furniture that was quite remarkable was an old 2 shelf bookcase that my grandmother used as a bedside table. In it she stored a whole range of precious books, wartime diaries and photo albums. It was made out of unfinished mahogany, and it had this rustic charm that lit up the whole bedroom.

Finally, the last piece that I fondly remember was a birch wall mounted bookshelf. It was in my grandfather's office, and in it he stored his old law journals, volumes and periodicals. This particular bookcase was great because it allowed my grandfather to clear up what was traditionally such a cluttered room. As his books were stored up off the ground, they weren't scattered around the floor taking up valuable floor space.

Beautiful Antique Furniture

From the youngest of ages, I have been always surrounded my many different types of beautiful furniture. As a youngster, I lived in an amazingly old Victorian era town house - it belonged to my foster parents, was over one hundred years old, and was filled with all kinds of antique furniture, some of which were incredibly valuable and timeless.

The first piece of furniture that I will always remember was a priceless artesian coffee table. It was crafted in the late eighteen hundreds out of mahogany timber, and had been passed down between family members for generations. This particular coffee table had a very particular ornamentation within the timber that I always admired and thought to be particularly beautiful.

The second piece of furniture that comes to my mind is my foster father's 4 shelf bookcase. It was itself crafted out of American oak, and it had this brilliant aroma that filled the entire study. This bookcase was filled with all kinds of study journals, volumes, and periodicals, so you can see how invaluable it was to my foster father, who was a lawyer for most of his life.

Lastly, I won't ever forget the simple 2 shelf bookcase that my foster mother had next to her bed; she used it as a cozy little bedside table. It was filled with her most precious kinds of books, including her own mother's wartime diaries, as well as photo albums of her immediate family. That bookcase was very special to my foster mother.

Four Steps to Creating Great Bookcase Displays

Decorating bookcases is something that boggles the mind of many. Many horizontal surfaces layered above one another, presenting countless opportunities to display your favorite things, but HOW? Where should you start? Are you paralyzed? Wasting time moving one accessory from shelf to shelf and then standing back to see how it looks?

Here are some tips to help make the process a bit easier.

1. Empty. Start by emptying off the shelves you'd like to decorate. Then sort through all items and remove things you don't really like, or any stray items that may have landed on the bookcases.

2. Collect/Shop. Now go around your house and collect items that you'd like to see displayed on those shelves. Take things from your bedroom, office, kitchen or storage area. Consider books, pictures, branches from trees, antiques you've kept packed away, wedding gifts that are still in storage. Bring them out. You should look at your treasures.

3. Place. Now that you have all of your accessories, begin at the top shelf and work down, zig-zagging and balancing the weight of objects as you go. If nothing else, this helps you decide where to place large objects on the next shelf. If you can adjust your shelf heights, do so to accommodate large or small items.

As you start to work, keep these things in mind:

- Don't be afraid to overlap items - creating layers that you can see through. An example is a branch (organic shape) in front of a picture (hard edges).

- Hang pictures on the back of bookcases to vary height and interest. This is especially helpful if you have tall shelves and don't have tall enough accessories.

- Place your accessories in odd groupings; it's pleasing to the eye-but don't get stuck on this rule. One thing you should always do is use items you love and want to see every day. If you vary height and scale you can use even groupings.

-Use hardback books to add visual appeal and color to shelves. If you have colorful hardback books try arranging them by color-creating color "blocks" on a shelf. A blue grouping was used here, as well as other colors that coordinated with the room. And while you're at it pull those books to the front of your shelves, where you can SEE them!

- Paint the back of the bookcase a contrasting color to the walls, or paint foam core boards and cut them to fit the backs of your shelves (this less permanent solution works just as well if positioned right), the same can be done with fabric to cover boards. Also paint switch plates & light switches that area within the bookcase.

4. Admire. Now layout your first shelf and take a step back to see how it looks, if it "works." Keep going, trying different things, shopping your house to find the right size or shaped objects. Once you're happy with one shelf, move on to the next.
